When he picked up a violin in sixth grade, he fell in love with it. A few years later, he auditioned for the preparatory orchestra of the Santa Rosa Symphony and was accepted as third chair first violin.
During one of the rehearsals, the string players demonstrated their instruments for the young musicians. “The second I heard the sound come from the violas, I was hooked,” Mr. Morales remembers. He went on to study with Linda Ghidossi DeLuca, principal violist with the Santa Rosa Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, and New Century Chamber Orchestra. Shortly after beginning his studies with her, he was accepted into the Young People’s Chamber Orchestra and the Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra. He joined the Youth orchestra on its European tour through the Czech Republic and Germany. During his senior year in high school, he performed with the Philharmonic on its two-week tour of China. A month after his return, Mr. Morales traveled to New York as part of the American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall.
While still in high school, Mr. Morales was featured in many performances, including the Telemann Viola Concerto in G, the Telemann double concerto, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the Bloch Suite for Viola and Orchestra, and Bach Cello suites for viola.
