[See image gallery at www.socophil.org]Hailed by Opera News Magazine as “superb,” and “show-stealing,” Brazilian-American baritone Igor Vieira made his professional debut in his native Rio de Janeiro at age 17, singing the role of Dancaïre in Bizet’s Carmen. Since then, Mr. Vieira has performed almost a hundred different operatic roles, in appearances with companies around the world, among them the San Francisco Opera, the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, Opera du Villecroze (France) Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Teatro Barakaldo (Spain), Tacoma Opera, West Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera, Rimrock Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, and Sacramento Opera.
A resident of Oakland, Mr. Viera made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2010 in the role of Happy in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West. The following year he returned to the San Francisco Opera stage in the role of Gubetta in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia. In the 2017/18 season, Mr. Vieira performed Orff’s Carmina Burana with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and made his Kennedy Center debut as the baritone soloist for Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with the Washington Chorus.
Mr. Vieira’s artistry has won him accolades in competitions around the world. He is a world finalist of the Fifth Luciano Pavarotti Voice Competition in Philadelphia, a recipient of the Margareth Tudor Award (Princeton) for two consecutive years and the Kaplan Foundation Award (Kansas City) for outstanding artistry. He was also awarded the Second Place on the East Bay Opera League Voice Competition in 2006 and was a semi-finalist of the Competizione d’Opera in Dresden, Germany in 2008.
Mr. Viera holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
